I feel like Maple 1 was made using 2d block style. Mostly. If you look at the map design, the ground elements are just a group of various blocks repeated. So a platform would have a left side block, middle blocks, and a right side block. Map editors made that clear. Knowing that, the block style in Maple 2 seems like the proper transition from 2d to 3d.
The interesting difference is that they decided to not have any corner/edge type blocks. At least from what I have seen. Everything is just full cube. Personally, I think adding in those corner/edge types would allow maps to looks far more interesting. I am curious to see if I will like the full cube style after some playtime.
