--- Introduction to Skill Builds ---

This guide contains a highly-optimized build that prioritizes theoretical damage above all else. That doesn't mean that the build suits every playstyle or even every character loadout. Certain buffs on items can have a dramatic impact on what's optimal, especially in the later parts of the build where the difference in damage between one skill and another is almost negligible

The fact that our skill points can be reset at will and without cost means that it's impossible to make a decision that will affect our character permanently. As such, we will find that the most optimal strategies actually involve removing points from certain skills as new pathways become opened to us. These guides have been split at these crucial moments where significant changes are made to the current allocation of skill points. What we'll see written in the build is less of where we're putting the skill points, but rather what level the skills should be at that time.

On top of that, you can earn extra skill points from trophies. As of this guide's last update, there are 17 possible bonus skill points to unlock. In each section of the guide, we'll discuss with a sentence or two where we want those points to go.

    --- Lv 1-24: Early Days ---

Up until level 25, we will focus on upgrading our main source of damage: Rapid Shot. It is definitely viable to max Arrow Barrage instead of Rapid Shot, but during the Epic Quests, where most players will spend their entire run from levels 1-50, there are a lot of bosses to kill, many of which you will need to solo. For this reason, Rapid Shot is strongly recommended over Arrow Barrage, as it is the core source of single-target damage.

Since we can only upgrade the skills once every two levels, on the alternate levels, we will be upgrading the two passive skills available to us, Bronze Eagle and Conditioning, which will further boost the damage that we can put out with our damaging abilities.

Any bonus skill points should go to Bronze Eagle because Rapid Shot and Conditioning will be kept at their maximum values.
Note that at level 16, we need to redistribute our skill points in order to unlock Rapid Shot right away.

    --- Lv 25-43: Raining Arrows ---

Now that we've hit level 25, it's imperative that we unlock Arrow Storm immediately. It's one of the Archer's most powerful and versatile skills, and it should be used it all situations. We need Arrow Barrage at level 5, so we'll need to do some shuffling of the skill points.

Bronze Eagle gives a massive buff at level 1, but levels 2-10 give a relatively insignificant buff. For that reason, we'll keep Bronze Eagle at level 1 for most of the rest of the build, only maxing it deep into the lategame.

Any bonus skill points should go to Conditioning, then Sharp Eyes, then Bronze Eagle, because Rapid Shot and Arrow Storm will be kept at their maximum values.

    --- Lv 43-64: Screw You! ---

With Rapid Shot maxed out and Arrow Rain close behind, the next ability to focus on will be Screwdriver Shot. It packs a massive punch, but unfortunately relies on a second skill - Precision Shooter - to reach its full potential. On one hand, that does mean we need to spend 20 points on these skills. On the other hand, the damage is incredible; especially when we get a critical hit!

Unfortunately, the wording of both skill descriptions ignores some important information: namely, the damage that Improved Screwdriver Shot actually does. At all levels, Improved Screwdriver Shot does ~179% of phase 1, ~92% of phase 2, and ~62% of phase 3 of Screwdriver Shot. We'll see this number in the skill's infobox when we hover over it on our hotbar. The damage buff that Precision Shooter gives to Improved Screwdriver Shot is applied on top of the number shown, so with Screwdriver Shot and Precision Shooter both maxed, the total damage from Improved Screwdriver Shot is 1639.5% damage.

In any case, we're going to max both as soon as we can, and it will take the next 20 levels to do so.

Any bonus skill points should go to Conditioning, then Sharp Eyes, then Bronze Eagle, because Screwdriver Shot and Precision Shooter will be kept at their maximum values.

    --- Lv 65-99: Getting Buff ---

Disclaimer: as long as the level cap remains below 64, Screwdriver Shot and Precision Shooter cannot be maxed. As per the instructions in the previous section, we will aim to max Conditioning, then Sharp Eyes, using our bonus skill points, and put the leftovers into Bronze Eagle. The rest of the guide is more or less theoretical, and aims to show a glimpse into the complexity and nuance of late-game archer builds. Until such a time as an increased level cap, good luck and happy shooting!

From here on out, we have met the requirements for every skill level and maxed the three attacks we'll use in rotation. All we have left is a series of passive and active buffs: Agile Archer, Bronze Eagle, Conditioning, Eagle's Majesty, and Sharp Eyes. That is, at least, until the Awakening. But that's a guide for another time.

Conditioning is the first priority, if you haven't already maxed it from bonus skill points, and after Conditioning, Agile Archer is the next strongest buff. Unfortunately, Agile Archer takes so many skill points just to unlock, that it's better to spend those points on other abilities until we can afford to reassign them all just to unlock it. We need to be able to justify spending 8 points on Evasive Salvo and Ice Arrow, two skills we really don't care about leveling, just to unlock Agile Archer, whereas the other buffs are mostly free.

Even before now, separate builds begin to emerge as players focus on certain paths they'd like to take: solo grinding, Normal and Hard Adventure dungeons, Chaos raids, and PvP. Remember that skill points can be reassigned at any time and, if we have the merets, we can unlock multiple pages to change between builds freely.

For example, there is a strong argument to be made in favour of putting Screwdriver Shot and Precision Shooter back down to level 1 just to unlock and max Agile Archer whenever attempting a chaos raid. Hopefully, if you're up to chaos raids, you have a very solid understanding of how your abilities work and where your stats lie, and don't need a skill build guide.

As a rule of thumb, as long as you have Rapid Shot and Arrow Storm maxed, and have at least 1 point in Evasive Salvo, Bronze Eagle, Screwdriver Shot, and Precision Shooter, it's hard to go wrong. Many of the skills for the rest of the build are balanced against each other, and offer very small buffs.

With all that said, we'll discuss the theoretically optimal build when not facing an enemy that demands the extra piercing that Agile Archer offers. We'll start with Sharp Eyes: a critical skill, pun intended, for large parties. Archers are inherently strong bossers already, but Sharp Eyes is what makes us a desirable must-have member of a raid. For PvP, whether or not a unique build emerges for that playstyle will be addressed when the Arena returns to GMS2.

At this point, the level markers are only hypothetical, and there are no more level requirements for any skills. Any bonus skill points should follow the guide as described, so if we are level 65 with 10 bonus skill points, we should be at the level 75 marker in the guide.

--- Dexterity, Critical Rate, and Attack ---

(Moved to this comment due to character limits - something I'll attempt to work around in the near future)

Archers have two valuable attributes they can increase, Dexterity and Critical Rate.

Dexterity (DEX) increases physical attack and affects physical resistance and accuracy. While it's easy to see DEX increase our attack when we put points into it, its effect on physical resistance and accuracy is completely negligible. We could put 50 points into DEX and only see our physical resistance go up by 2 or 3; our accuracy stat might not change at all. The main reason this stat is so valuable is because it increases our physical attack, which just means more damage outright. The more DEX we have, the more damage we do. It's only a small piece of the damage pie, but as you level up, you'll notice your DEX rise above all the other scores until you have several hundred DEX and the other stats are still in the 20s.

Critical Rate (CRIT) increases the probability that an attack will land as a critical hit. This probability cannot exceed 40%. Compared to the other five attributes, which can have 100 points allocated, CRIT can only have 60 points allocated. It's really important to distinguish between the character attribute (CRIT) and the actual chance we have to land a critical hit, which is measured as a percentage. The relationship between CRIT and our crit rate is currently unknown, as it is not explained in-game, and other factors, such as a player's luck score and the enemy's critical evasion score both affect this chance.

It's therefore quite hard to understand what our crit rate is and how much impact each point in CRIT makes. Testing it out on a training dummy, which may or may not have some critical evasion, suggests that the base crit rate could be around 5%. A level 50+ archer with 60 points into CRIT has around 20% even without Sharp Eyes. That is a big jump, and CRIT is obviously a decent skill for archers for a few reasons, but critical hits in MapleStory 2 only do 125% of the normal damage of an attack. In order to make points in CRIT worth it, one should aim to increase their critical damage using items. Something we'll talk about more in this guide.

The Attack score (ATT) tries to give some insight into how effective our CRIT is. ATT is a generalized estimation of combat prowess, based on weapon attack, physical attack, magic attack, critical rate, and critical damage. Unfortunately, it doesn't take into account bonus attack, accuracy, attack speed, skill cooldown reduction, or any form of piercing or damage bonus.

"So should we put our ability points into DEX or CRIT?"

It's easy to put points into CRIT and see that our ATT goes higher than it would if we put those same points into DEX, but that's not the full story, and our ATT is not a stat used in damage calculation, it's just a score based on a select group of other stats that do actually affect our damage. Based on our current understanding of the Archer's damage formula, DEX seems to be the better option for most scenarios, even if we ignore the tiny amount of physical resistance and accuracy it provides.

The one stat that could seriously swing the balance in favour of CRIT is critical damage. Critical damage is more black and white than critical rate, thank goodness. Critical damage on items goes straight to the amount of damage that a critical hit does, although the number on the item appears to be ten times larger than you would expect. +50 critical damage, for example, would increase your critical damage from 125% to 130%. The only explanation for this is to allow for decimal places in one's critical damage.

In any case, the current advice is to put all of your ability points into DEX unless you are able to get a decent amount of extra critical damage from items, at which point, you should swap all the points over to CRIT. It's hard to say at what threshold this should occur, and a lot of other factors play a role in where our maximum potential DPS lies. For more personal application, put your ability points into DEX and test your damage per second (DPS) against training dummies, which can be found in all guild houses. Try the same experiment with your ability points in CRIT and compare the two for yourself. Perform this test each time your critical damage changes and assess for yourself what you should do with your ability points.

Thanks for the compilation! Can I ask for the source material as well? I think I've seen some of the skill descriptions in that layout somewhere else before.

Haha I call them Ranger in my guide because it sounds nicer than saying 'the Archer category breaks into two classes, the Archer and the Heavy Gunner'. :D

Either way I have my 'Archer' graphics ready should I need to make the switch :p

They will probably change it to like Bowmen or something different so we won't be so confused. Or maybe it will be the Ranger Category. AaaH I just want beta already so we can know more official info!

Yeah, unfortunately, the forums are pretty limited as far as formatting goes. I'll keep working on it, but what I really need is the ability to make tables. I made a post on the Sugestions and Feedback forums about the issue.

@DanDK My source is here. It's all in Korean, but Google does a semi-decent job of translating it. My translation is more "thought for thought" than "word for word".

@Faelight Actually, I used the word "Ranger" because that's what nexon uses. See here for their official guide to the classes. It's not just that they use the Korean word for "ranger" which we translate into "ranger" (which is true), it's the fact that even on the Korean site, they have it called "Ranger" in English.

Whether or not the class names will change in GMS is still up for debate, though the fact that this is the "Archer" forum does lend some credence to that theory, but as soon as that happens, it's easy enough to edit the post.

I did a quick write-up on the class names and categories as per the Korean translations in this thread.

@DrYoshiyahu - I understand that is the Korean translation, on the Korean site but we are talking about this site. Yes, I've seen it everywhere as Ranger.

However all official Global channels have been calling it Archer so that must be the way GMS2 is choosing to translate the class. They have yet to call it Ranger in the English version regardless of the Korean translation. It was called Archer during the official announcement stream at MapleFest, on the official discord, the road trip quizzes and now this forums. I don't think it is a debate, the class is Archer for GMS2.

@Faelight Yeah, I think you've made a convincing case. Translations are always fascinating to me. I'm super excited for the CBT mainly so we get to see some official translations of character names, skill descriptions, and other flavour text.

Rest assured that the moment I log in on that day, I'm just going to spend the entire day transcribing everything into the guide. :P

The big question left unanswered, at least for me personally, is what the class categories (계열) are going to be in GMS2. Pretty sure the Archer class won't be in the Archer series.

I'll definitely be accepting any help anyone can offer. One thing that will either take time or crowd-sourcing are the upgrade amounts for each equip and skill. I hope I can max out every skill and get the stats at each level during the CBT, but it's unlikely. So if any Archers get to 50+, and start upgrading some of those higher-level equips and skills, I'm definitely happy to get some screenshots at every threshold.

Or, maybe you can try asking anyone who has access to the game in beta to share you those game files, and take a peek on anything related to archers :) Game files are the fastest way to fill up a guide ;) I could be wrong so don't blame me xP

If I get into closed beta I'll post whatever I can in this thread to help you out :)

Don't know if I am going to be rushing to level cap or not.

On another note, what programs do you use to look into the game files?

I'll probably make a new thread when CBT starts, just for spamming screenshots of quests, equips, and skills. Don't really want this comment section to be spammed with nothing but screenshots. :P

So I've added basic skill builds for bossing and mobbing, and I was able to hit the character limit pretty easily. Glad I reserved those other two comments.

In any case, I'd love to get feedback on the builds. Do you agree or disagree? Will you be rushing Sharp Eyes?
